However due to its inert surface polyethylene lacks surface energy hydrophilicity and biocompatibility. There exists a demand for tailoring polyethylene properties transfonning it into valuable commodity polymer.Surface modification ofpolyethylene is due to evolution of functional group moieties specifically hydroxyl sulfonic and carbonyl. These functional groups are introduced by the action of acids surfactants polymer grafting flame oxidation plasma and photochemical processes without changing bulk properties of the polymer. In this review we discuss surface modification techniques with emphasis on acid treatment. Analytical techniques like FTIR-ATR Contact angle goniometry SEM AFM XPS and DSC are used to characterize and quantify the transformation. This paper also accounts industrial and bio-medical applications of surface modified polyethylene namely biliary stents catheter tubing implants printable polyethylene adhesive tapes and automobile parts.\n\nDownload File\n-------------\n\nFull text available from:\n\nAbstract\n--------\n\nPolyethylene have diverse varieties ranging from linear low density to ultra-high molecular weight they are principally classified on basis of density molecular weight and branching.
